“Sleepy Hollow inspires me as an artistic endeavor because I have not yet choreographed a truly haunting tale. The story’s eerie world invites movement that will be shaped by shadow, suspense, and moments of fear, paired with humor and charm to balance the darkness as we get to know the town’s residents.”
Pamela Robinson-Harris, Choreographer
Choreographer Pamela Robinson brings Washington Irving’s gothic tale to life in Ballet West’s newest Family Classic Series: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Following her acclaimed work on Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast, Robinson faced a unique creative challenge: adapting the spooky atmosphere of Sleepy Hollow for audiences as young as five.
Through extensive research from the 1949 Disney adaptation to the real Sleepy Hollow in New York, Robinson has crafted a ballet that honors the original story while ensuring it delights young viewers. Featuring Ballet West Academy students and combining narration with dance, this production continues the company’s tradition of inspiring the next generation of dancers through magical storytelling.
Ballet West is creating original sets, costumes, and props for this production, and sponsors have the exclusive opportunity to have their names included inside these beautiful garments that will bring Sleepy Hollow’s characters to life on stage.
“What excites me about Sleepy Hollow is that Ballet West doesn’t have any other ballet costumes from this era. I’m grateful for the opportunity to produce costumes from the 1790s, as they are very specific, and often in ballet we don’t get to create costumes from an exact time period.”
