Terms used in the Handbook

TERMS USED IN THE HANDBOOK AND IN SCHEDULES

  • BW: Ballet West (Professional Company)
  • BWII: the pre-professional company of Ballet West
  • JQLCT or Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre: the theatre where the SLC performances will take place.  It is located at 50 West 200 South.
  • JEQBC or Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre: the building just west of the JQLCT.  Address:  52 West 200 South; SLC, UT 84101.
  • BW Costume Shop:  It is located in the basement of the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre.
  • Call: an announcement given by the stage manager to the performers.  Dancers are “called” to the Theatre at a specific time.  A call is also made to let the performers know how much time remains until “curtain” or the beginning of an act, ie. “Top of the show, 15 minutes!”
  • Keypad Code for Parking Arm: 3119# will raise the parking arm on the U-drop lot pick up zone.
  • Kids Call:  the time all children must be present in their dressing room for stage rehearsals and/or performances.  This includes chaperones.  While it is very important not to arrive late, it is also important not to arrive too early. The children have a lot of “wait time” before, during and after they perform. There will be no one available to watch your child until Kids Call. You must supervise your dancer until that time.  Important notes for the day will be given at Kids Call and each child must be present.  Kids Call time varies by role.
  • Kids:  indicates all student performers in BW Nutcracker.  All young dancers as well as Chaperones/Makeup supervisor are grouped with Kids on the schedule.  Please make note of this practice if you plan to fill one of these volunteer parent positions.
  • Commitment:  an agreement made between dancers, parents and staff to attend all BW rehearsals, performances, and fittings: on time and prepared. This is imperative for this quality production. Commitment is expected!  Failure to comply is grounds for dismissal.
  • Casting: the selection of dancers for the Nutcracker. Casting is done by the Artistic Staff only. It is not based on one’s place of residence or on carpool areas or vacations. Parents are not allowed to request their child not be chosen for certain performances. We take into consideration sibling casting only. Final Casting will be available once the Artistic Director has approved casting.
  • Cast: The group your dancer will be performing with this season.  There will be 3 performing casts: A, B, & C, with the exception of Clara, Frtz, & Nephew in Colored Casts of Red, Yellow, Blue & Green.
  • Role: the specific part a performer is given in the Nutcracker.  Please remember that there are non dancing roles in the Nutcracker.
  • Call-back: the final audition for certain roles. The roles of Clara, Fritz, and the Nephew will be cast by Artistic Director and Artistic Staff.
  • Rehearsals: the time when dancers learn and perfect choreography.  They are a required portion of your Nutcracker commitment.  When a dancer misses a rehearsal, it affects the entire cast.  It also shows a lack of commitment.
  • Notes: concerns, compliments, and corrections.  These are given at the end or beginning of rehearsals and performances.
  • Costume Fitting: a scheduled appointment for each dancer to try on the costume they will wear in the production.  Please come to the fitting with hair done according to role assignment and in appropriate clothing, Girls must wear a leotard and tights and Boys must wear a fitted white t-shirt and bike shorts or tights.  Costumes are fitted individually for each dancer in the cast; with 3 or 4 casts, it is necessary for adjustments to be made; therefore attendance is mandatory.  Costume fittings are done according to role and cast.  Specific information for each role will be given to your dancer at this time by the wardrobe department.  You can also find performance costume information on the main page under Costume Info.
  • Spacing: spacing rehearsal to give the dancers exact marks to follow on stage. It is not necessarily a full rehearsal. This rehearsal is directed by the Artistic Staff. Some casts will only get a limited spacing rehearsal prior to their 1st performance. Spacing Rehearsals take place in your dancer ON STAGE rehearsals. They are very important!!!!
  • Tech: technical rehearsal.  It is a full length rehearsal on stage with full cast including the BW Company Dancers, lighting and orchestra.  This rehearsal is directed by the Stage Manager.  Quick costume changes and specific costume pieces or props may be used.
