Ballet West recently unveiled a commissioned painting honoring the memory of Reagan Michelle Tolboe (July 5, 1975 – January 10, 2022). The artwork, created by celebrated artist Nathan Florence, captures the essence of what Tolboe held dear – the beauty and artistry of ballet.

The commission, initiated by her mother Diane P. Stewart and family, represents more than just a moment in ballet; it embodies Tolboe’s connection to Ballet West and her deep appreciation for the art form. Tolboe’s love for ballet, particularly Ballet West, was a defining aspect of her life in Salt Lake City. While Swan Lake held a special place in her heart, her commitment to the company never wavered, attending every season with devoted enthusiasm.

“The commission exceeded all expectations,” shares Diane Stewart. “Not only was the painting beautiful in its depiction of a moment in ballet, but the palette and composition were brilliant.” The choice of Nathan Florence as the artist holds particular significance, as he was one of Tolboe’s most admired artists, adding an extra layer of meaning to this memorial.

The painting serves multiple purposes – it’s both a tribute to Tolboe’s passion and a gift to the broader Ballet West community. Now permanently displayed in the Capitol Room of the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, the artwork stands as a testament to the talent displayed at Ballet West and the extraordinary strength in bringing challenging choreography to life.
