A Utah premiere in one evening-length production, this radiant production of Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds showcases George Balanchine’s masterful choreography and pays homage to the golden age of dance. Set to the music of Gabriel Fauré, Emeralds evokes France, the birthplace of Romantic dance. Poetic and flowing, its ballerinas drift on stage in clouds of tulle, whispering of elegance, fashion and fragrance. A sassy, jazzy burst of sunshine, Rubies mirrors the carefree spontaneity of America, epitomizing the collaboration of Balanchine and influential 20th century composer Igor Stravinsky, and the American style of ballet that Balanchine developed. Diamonds dazzles as Balanchine's tribute to the work of Marius Petipa, with the music of Peter Tchaikovsky, and evokes the grandeur and precision of the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg with each shimmering wave of classical elegance.
“…simple and complex, thought-provoking and crowd-pleasing, deeply traditional and utterly modern.” – Roslyn Sulcas, The New York Times
