“To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Ballets Russes (famous for introducing Picasso and Coco Chanel to the world stage), Adam Sklute—the artistic director of Ballet West—invited local Utah artists to submit designs addressing the theme of a Brave New World. Was their vision Utopian? Dystopian? Fanciful? Absurdist? What followed was a flood of submissions and after much deliberation 18 artists were chosen for their compelling and inventive use of medium. Each artist was then given a pair of pointe shoes—and what Ballet West got in return were shoes reimagined in metal, stained glass, graffiti art, prickly quills, amethyst, wood and clay. It’s exciting and provocative work and Ballet West is proud to show it off.”
