Shoe-In 2010
in
Dreams are the reason we as human beings have accomplished so much. They are the inspiration and vision we turn to during challenging times and it’s in this spirit that Ballet West presents Shoe-In 2010.
The 2010 Shoe-In project includes fourteen one of a kind pointe shoe inspired art pieces by local Utah artists. Shoe-In is a Ballet West Ambassador sponsored project and all proceeds will benefit Ballet West’s educational and artistic programs.
For more information on purchasing any of these incredible works of art or to schedule a time to view the shoes in person, please contact Jessica Turner: 801-869-6964 or jturner@balletwest.org

Caleb Workman$500 Caleb Workman comes from a humble background. Born in rural Idaho, he spent summers as a youth on his Granddad’s ranch where there wasn't much to do but get lost in his books and sketch pad. Far away from freeways and train yards, miles away from the nearest supermarket, supplies were flown to the ranch by plane. The silence was deafening, yet perfect for nurturing his imagination. When Caleb returned to the city, he would break away to the bookstore to absorb graffiti, skate and Fangoria magazines which heavily influenced his artistic direction. |

Heather Campbell$2,500 The creation process is personal to every Artist, from their unique vision of the world to the actual materials they choose to express themselves. Heather Campbell lives with her husband in a late 1800’s Victorian home along the Logan River in Cache Valley, Utah. The Purple Door studio is located in the old summer kitchen that is separate from the main house which is near the river that runs through her backyard. It is a lovely setting and a wonderful space to inspire her as she practices her art. Campbell comes from a family that has always encouraged creative thought and artistic experimentation. She has spent many years in the Arts and Crafts industry working with oil, watercolor, ceramics, wood and metals. She is fascinated with polymer clay and has enjoyed learning and sharing all she can about this unique art medium. She loves to get lost in the touch, smells, mixing of color and magical transformation of clay. Three dimensional art and mixed media have always been her favorites. Her eclectic taste and passion for antiques and old stuff blend in beautifully with the versatility of polymer clay. All of her jewelry and sculpture pieces are original, one of a kind, unique and intricate. They are inspired by the natural balance of color, texture and design revealed each day in our fascinating world, combined with life experience. |

Bobbi Lewin$800 SOLD All my life I’ve been making things and drawing pictures. I work in mixed media because there are just too many pretty colors and textures to choose one path only. I like to approach art from a sense of play and to explore the line between art and craft. I believe that any person who sets out to create something that expresses a part of their self is an artist. I work primarily in 2D; creating these hummingbirds tapped into a different part of me. I had to think about the process in such a different way than 2 dimensional pieces. Working in 3D required some more abstract thinking; you have to carefully think through and plan all the stages. I also grew familiar with my work in a different way; constructing the birds, especially as I sewed the wings, felt like a live creature was forming in my hands. My work has been shown at Art Access Gallery, UAF, and Brolly Arts H20 event. |

Visual Art Institute$300 SOLD The Visual Art Institute, now in its 32nd year, remains true to its mission: to foster and preserve the creative voices of youth by assisting them in exploring their imagination and artistic abilities through in-depth training, independent study, and experimentation in all aspects of visual art. VAI is a non-profit, after-school art program for children and teens that centers on critical thinking and conceptual development. 30% of our students are on tuition assistance, and nearly all of our seniors that graduate from the program receive college scholarships based on portfolio review to continue their higher arts education. We also run a contemporary art center, GARFO, out of our Sugarhouse location. For this project, each age group and our staff worked on one painting: elementary, junior high/high school, and our staff/faculty. Each group used the pointe shoes as the tool to make the painting. |
